WilmaMy 11 year old beagle/basset mix Wilma has been urinating in two places in the house the past few months. She has always been very housebroken and always used her dog door to relieve herself outside. Her urination in the house is not consistent since she sometimes urinates outside when she uses her doggie door. The vet said she had crystals in her urine but the medication has since taken care of that. The vet says she no longer has the infection but that her urine is high alkaly. I thought once her infection was cleared up that she might stop urinating but she continues. I am not sure what to do at this point. She knows it's wrong to urinate inside the house. Has anyone encountered this problem?
AlbertIf there are no medical conditions, the problem may be behavioral. Housebreaking techniques may need to be used again.
PaulineA too acidic, or too alkaline urine presents problems. You have to have dog on a special diet to maintain a balance.Vet should have advised what diet in particular based on what the stones where comprised of, if he sent them to be checked out. I don't think at this point that it is necessarily behavioral due to a recent infection/crystals, and the age of the animal. I think this needs a vet to take another sample, possible screening blood test, checking the BUN, creatinine levels, etc, and palpation to check for any masses/enlargements/abnormalities. She just may not have had enough med to have taken care of the infection, and the fact that her diet remains the same, will not diminish the particular urological situation- a vicious circle. God bless.
WilmaThank you for your feedback. I heard from the vet again this morning and he assured me that Wilma has no medical condition and that her ph in urine is fine. He believes that since she is approaching 12 years of age that she may be experiencing some form of senility and also may not care anymore where she urinates. He suggests I can keep her in a confined area so she does not urinate. I have 2 rooms that lead to her doggie door in which she can stay until she is housebroken again.
candee14I have a senior dog as well. He is 16 and a half years old. (will be 17 in january) He is a shih tzu. He was recently having problems with his housebreaking. My vet put him on a senility medication called anipryl. it seems to have helped. He stays asleep all night, (used to get up and bark excessively at all hours) and very rarely goes to the bathroom in the house. Still has a few accidents here and there. but overall, its better!
Doc HelladayHi Wilma there is something you might want to try since it happens in same place if this is on your carpet, try a little chili pepper..it wont hurt your carpet and it is easily vacumed up. If it is on your tile or reg type of flooring try a little vinegar wiped on..neither of these things will hurt your animal..Well good luck and also maybe put on the dog some old underware maybe childrens size to fit her..
