Tom My indoor cat, male age 11, has begun drinking 4 times the amount of water normal for him. He also urinates 4 times as much. He eats Iams hairball control for adult cats. He was coughing hairballs before this but that has pretty much stopped.

Pauline Tom I don't think you should wait further, he needs to see a vet as he seems to be experiencing kidney/bladder related problems, urinary tract infection, common in neutered males over age 2 moreso. He may be put on a special diet such as Hill's Prescription Diet cd-s/Purina One Special Diet for adult cats, in order to keep the tract a bit moreacidic than alkaline. Cats become toxic fast, so no hesitation.
Another thought, he may be diabetic, or be experiencing Polycystic Kidney Disease, very common in adult cats of a particular breed such as the Persians. I do think it's moreso Feline Urologic Syndrome stuff going on though, the vet of course must do the check-up. Notice any blood in the urine, and by "excess" do you mean FREQUENT or EXCESSIVE AMOUNT? Why, is because excessive, denotes diabetes moreso,an overproduction of urine; and frequent,(but scanty and possibly blood-tainted), denotes urologic infection moreso, 2 differing disease states with differing causes. Iams has high protein and some breeders can't feed it to their cats cause of the problems it can cause such as urologic ones. I know I had to get my Persians off it. Some cats never suffer at all and can eat anything!
You don't say if he's a Persian, but Persians also suffer from PKD, usually showing after age 7 in some genetic lines. Cysts grow in the kidneys, requires an x-ray/scan to see them. Good luck now.
