daphneMy best friend's cat has always had rather puffy jowls, I just thought that it was a "male" thing, tomcat and all that.....they were always firm. Last night one side of his face seems to have burst, and we found blood all up the wall, and he just sat crouched in one corner. When I palpated the area, it was soft and gushy. Eventually he took off outside, and we can't find him. Any ideas on what kind of condition this might be?

PaulinePoor guy, must feel uncomfortable. I would first wash all the wall area with a 1:10 solution of bleach if possible, as the blood and exudate can contain potential microorganisms that just may cause problems later.
As for kitty, you say he then went outside, is a male, with an open abcess. My guess is if the exudate/abcess were swabbed/incised by a vet he/she can determine just exactly whether you are dealing with a fungal or bacterial infection. In any event, it could have resulted from a fight with another cat outside, eating a dead or captured something like a rabbit or bird.Or maybe even a mouth or ear infection that has abcessed,or from a tick or flea that has caused abcesses, only a vet can tell. Meanwhile, cleaning it with hydrogen peroxide mixed with water or saline water will help; Betadine (iodide solution); and keeping kitty bathed with an antifungal or medicated shampoo will also help. Ttry going to www.peteducation.com, maybe it can shed some light on this abcess. Good luck.
