JanI would really appreciate any help anyone can give me with this.
I have a 12 yr old male Persian that has been diagnosed with thyroid disease. He began urinating outside his box and my vet said they will develope behavior problems sometimes when their thyroid is acting up. He weighed 11+ lbs before he got sick and has lost down to 7 lbs. He has been on Tapazole for his thyroid but began to sit in the corner and not feel well enough to do much else. Took him back to the vet (yet again) and insisted they check to see if some other problem could be going on. Now it seems he is in cronic renal failure with a creatinine level of 12. The first 3 days the sub-Q fluids only brought his level down one point but over the past week it has dropped to 6 which is still way too high. The vet has started him on a potassium supplement, carafate for nausea and reglan to also help his tummy. He will eat only if I go to the vets and hand feed him. He has begun to quiver in his paws and is very weak. He has lost interest in everything and no longer seems to care if I am there or not. He has been at the vets now for 9 days. They say we need to decide whether to put him down. I keep reading where so many folks have brought home a cat in the same condition and fed it pedialyte and administered sub-Q fluids at home, and the kitty is still OK after 2-3 years. If anyone knows anything else that I should do please post a reply or email me. I will bring him home tomorrow and see if being here will help him any.
    Thanks for your help,
    Jan
PaulineJan I am so sorry you are having a Persian with this. It is very common in certain breeding lines of this purebred cat. I have 2 myself. Does he have any cysts in the kidneys; was he ever screened for PKD at an earlier time or now? He is at the age, after 7 yrs, where many do suffer and unfortunately palliative efforts are all that can be done. I imagine the vet changed his diet also to a lower protein one. Protein taxes the kidney and yrs of high protein takes it's toll as well. This breed just has a weaker immune system than others as a general rule, but yes, some can and do respond and live for a few yrs more. However, constant palliative care is needed. Try going to the sights of: www.vetinfo.com; and www.fabcats.org; as well as www.PetEducation.com, and lastly, www.vin.com/PetCare/VetHospital. I wish your furbaby well, and for you, the strength to know what decision would be in the best interest of this beloved pet. God bless.
