Message subject : Young kitten in heat?

Message Body:
Hi,

My husband and I have a 3 and a half month old kitten called Sausage and we are just wondering if it is at all possible for her to come into heat at such a young age.

She comes from a "highly fertile lineage" whose mother was giving birth every 2 and a half months.

Background: Mother and first kitten, K.KU -pronounced kay-koo-, were strays when they adopted us. At that time she was already pregnant with Sausage. We were waiting for her to finish nursing Sausage before we got her spayed, but she got herself knocked up again when Sausage was about 3 weeks old, and gave birth to 2 more kittens on the way to SPCA. *sigh* Anyhow, mother and newest litter are now at SPCA, no chance of her getting pregnant again and we gave them enough money to have her spayed and looked after.

So now we are keeping Sausage and her older brother, K.KU, both of whom get along well and we just love them! (Yes, KKU has been neutered.)

We asked our vet about getting Sausage spayed, but he recommends waiting until she is 6 months old. We're just worried that that might be too late!

Any advice is really appreciated. Thanks!

Regards,
